We begin in Greece at the height of their power and elegance. The fractious cities of Greece had united to defeat the massive army and navy of Persia. In the years of relative peace that followed, Greece prospered. As Donald Kagan writes, "It was a time of extraordinary cultural achievement... probably unmatched in originality and richness in all of human history." But it was also the time in which the Greek Mediterranean started to consolidate into a bipolar world: Sparta versus Athens, the Peloponnesian League versus the Delian League. The battle lines for the coming Peloponnesian War were forming, a war that would - eventually - destroy the power, if not the prestige, of Greece.

In this bonus episode of New Humanists, Jonathan and Ryan kick off their ancient history megaseries on the Peloponnesian War, taking a look at Chapter One of Donald Kagan's one-volume history, The Peloponnesian War.
