Thucydides says that the conflict over Epidamnus was the first discrete cause of the Peloponnesian War, and it is in his recounting over that conflict that we encounter the first speeches in Thucydides' history. For many students, a handful of speeches are the only thing they ever read from Thucydides. You can understand why: They are compelling, well-crafted, and fit perfectly into the larger historical narrative.

In this New Humanists+ bonus episode, the seventh installment of the "Greece Occidens" megaseries, Jonathan and Ryan read and discuss Thucydides I.24-55.
