After a panhellenic force led by Sparta and Athens defeated the Persians, it took 50 years for the Greek world to fracture in two, pitting Sparta against Athens in the catastrophic Peloponnesian War. That 50-year interval of relative (but not total) peace, called the Pentecontaetia, saw the rise of Athenian power and the consolidation of the Athenian naval empire. It also featured some serious Athenian misadventures too, including the expedition to Egypt.

In this New Humanists+ bonus episode, the ninth installment of the "Greece Occidens" megaseries, Jonathan and Ryan read and discuss Thucydides I.89-118.
